Fremantle-based indie rock band Figurehead have been nominated for best Indie/Alternative Rock Song at the prestigious Independent Music Awards – to be held in New York on June 22.
This year’s Independent Music Award judges include such icons of rock music as Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan, Lee Ann Womack, Robert Smith of The Cure, musical polymath Todd Rundgren, Nicole Atkins and Ben Lovett from Mumford & Sons.
This announcement comes off the back of a truly extraordinary 12 months for the trio – featuring frontman Matt Murphy, lead guitarist Josh Gallagher and bassist Ross Mace – whose IMA nominated song Ear To Lend took out the 2018 WAM Song Of The Year Award for the 15-17s High School category.
While barely out of school, the band has garnered a formidable reputation in WA, built on a sound that draws from the fertile springs of WA’s indie rock tradition: with clamorous guitars, soaring melodies and chest-pounding vocals.
“It’s been a wild year,” frontman Matt Murphy laughs. “When the message came through to tell me we’d been nominated I was kind of distracted by the epic surf at Cottesloe and totally forgot about it… for a few weeks. When I finally went back to the message and reread it I suddenly realised it wasn’t a joke at all: we’d somehow been nominated for a major award in America. I still don’t even know who nominated us – but whoever it was, we owe you a pint!”
